The well-known hill station of Sapa, in Lao Cai province, in northern Vietnam has been featured in every Vietnamese newspaper for almost two weeks. The reason why is the snow that has been recently falling in the region, covering terraced rice fields with a white blanket that enthralls tourists and photographers. On the other hand, locals are a little less enthusiastic about that snow and that rough climate. Cold and snow may be dangerous for harvests and animals. Indeed, the region is mainly agricultural, and such weather could bring a lot of damage for many people living there. Local infrastructure doesn’t fit a snowy climate, and may be breaking down. Many roads are already blocked around Sapa and Lao Cai for instance.
